Why it is important to support old people at home in Cambodia

The number of elderly individuals living alone has reached significant levels, highlighting the need for comprehensive emotional support. According to a recent report by the Pew Research Center, approximately 27% of adults aged 60 and older in the United States live alone, which amounts to roughly 19 million people. The number of older people in Cambodia is growing as well, and we see already many older people living alone in the countryside. “

“When compared with the age distribution in 2008, it is clear that Cambodia’s population is slowly aging. In 2019, 29.4 percent of Cambodia’s population was aged 15 years or younger; and 8.9 percent was aged 60 years and over. The corresponding percentages in 2008 were 33.7 percent and 6.3 percent respectively. As a consequence of these changes, the median age has increased from 22 years in 2008 to 27 years in 2019” wrote the most recent census report from 2019.

This statistic underscores the urgent necessity for caregiving services that provide emotional and psychological support.

Emotional support is a cornerstone of homecare in Cambodia.

Emotional support plays a vital role in the overall well-being of sick and elderly individuals. Research has shown that loneliness and social isolation can have detrimental effects on physical and mental health, increasing the risk of conditions such as depression, anxiety, and even cognitive decline. Emotional support helps mitigate these risks by fostering a sense of connection, belonging, and purpose. Cambodia’s culture is more based on family support rather than communities, hence the lack of caring services.

Care for older Cambodian people: beyond mere companionship

Caregiving services are uniquely positioned to offer this essential emotional support. Professional caregivers are trained to provide empathetic, compassionate care that addresses the emotional needs of their clients. This care goes beyond mere companionship; it involves actively listening to the individuals’ concerns, sharing in their joys and sorrows, and providing reassurance and encouragement.

Moreover, caregiving services can help facilitate social interactions and community engagement. For instance, caregivers can accompany their clients to social events, assist them in maintaining communication with family and friends, and encourage participation in community activities. These interactions are crucial in preventing feelings of isolation and promoting a healthier, more fulfilling life.

In addition to emotional benefits, the presence of a caregiver can significantly enhance the overall quality of life for elderly individuals. Caregivers can assist with daily tasks, ensuring that the home environment is safe and conducive to well-being. This support can alleviate the stress and anxiety associated with managing household responsibilities, allowing individuals to focus on their health and happiness.

The growing number of elderly individuals living alone highlights the importance of emotional support in their daily lives. Caregiving services play a pivotal role in providing this support, offering not only practical assistance but also the emotional connection that is essential for a healthy, fulfilling life. By addressing the emotional and psychological needs of the elderly, caregiving services help ensure that they can live with dignity, comfort, and joy in their own homes.
